Welcome to my blog dedicated to my Elizabeth House Shop Talk Series. I have worn many hats in my life and continue to do so. One hat I wore for several years was as a shop owner. I had zero experience, zero dollars, and zero connections. The Internet and blogging were practically non-existent back then and shop owners back then were not willing to share. Books were too complicated because my questions were so basic (and almost too embarrassing to ask!). I had no clue what I was getting into and to be honest, I had some resentment that I had learned so much the hard way because I truly had no one to turn to. I swore to myself that if I ever learned a darn thing, I would pass it on to others because there is no such thing as a stupid question. I am willing to share my experiences as a store owner, consultant, buyer, vendor, stylist, and designer. Basically, we all want the same thing - to create, to learn, and be happy doing it. I hope this blog brings you a little joy in knowing that you are not alone and that there is at least one person out there that has "been there done that" who didn't have a clue and has lived to write about it. I love to talk shop and the biz of business continues to intrigue me.

Display Posting #1

Hello Everyone!

Well since this the very first annual Elizabeth Wants to See It! Creative Display Competition, I am just making it up as I go. So, I think it will be fun (and easier for me at the moment) to show the displays in several different postings. Mainly, if I waited until I got them all loaded, and comment upon and so on, you would get frustrated with me for taking so long...and besides...this makes it look more official...don't you think?

Well, it does to me.

So heeerrrreeee we go... (now playing soft, pageant, runway music...)

In a soft voice I am announcing:

Okay, so for our first posting, we have one very lovely Debbie York of Athens, Texas. Debbie loves puppies, makes pies, and will work for world peace - but only if she gets weekends off with her boyfriend, Skip....

Screeeech! Now you hear the record scratching really loud as this music comes to a screeching halt...

And now turn up the volume, stomp your cowboy boots (to kick off the poop), clap your hands and whoop and holler as the banjo and fiddle begins to play for......

Talkingwhitetrash DEBBIE YORK!!!!

Debbie is a gal on the prowl. The only pies you will see her handling are the ones made farm fresh that she is chipping off her boots. World peace is great, but if you hang with Debbie you will learn that her personal world is a piece of its own. Boyfriend, girlfriend, old friend or new friend, it doesn't matter, Debbie will welcome anyone into her trashy world if they walk the talk and can yackety yack.  Debbie puts the talking in talkingwhitetrash and if she is talking to you that only means you are one trashy friend - the best kind!

If this hasn't got you clicking on her link by now you are either numb, blind, or your aren't paying attention which means you have to go back to the end of the line and start all over again before you can scroll down. Click. CLICK on her site! Yes, that is a requirement. In fact, I designed this post so it won't be able to scroll down until you actually click on her talkingwhitetrash site. I mean, I highlighted for you and everything...so click it! CLICK....ON....IT!

(Now don't go and tell me you actually clicked on the word, "highlighted" did you?)   :-)

I bet you scrolled down to just test me didn't you? That means your are ornery. That's good. Debbie loves ornery people - so you are her people or rather, you are one of her peeps.

So you waited long enough....below is a peep for her peeps at her version of relaxation that she calls "Texasfied"

Okay, I know I showed this one photo already, but I didn't want to disrupt the flow of the photos. But don't you just love it?? NOW can't you hear the fiddles, the whooping and hollering and how this poor gal needs to relax? I love it! This poor gal is so pooped she doesn't have the strength to pull off her other boot!  Look at her - she needs a good looking cowboy in there pulling off that boot and giving her a massage - but if Debbie did that, then she might have to put a red light in the window....and may get a citation for starting a red light district. Ha-hahaha! But for now you can find her without any red lights (yet) at Winnie &Tulula's, an antique mall owned by Gloria Kerzee.  The address is 119 E. Tyler St, Athens, TX,  phone 903-677-6868.

I met Debbie at Round Top Antique Fair in Texas a couple of years ago and we have stayed in touch "cyberally" since, so I felt safe with my bold fun with her. But if you ever get a chance to meet her, you will understand. Okay, this is the first posting, so not that I feel I need to, but just in case, I will take a moment to remind everyone that this is a friendly "competition" to inspire others, make us smile, and to give us ideas. And if the only idea you get is that you need to go get a good soak and relax, then the display did its job.

The more I stare at the photos, the more I want to steal those boots - literally. I love cowboy boots. I have about five pairs. Six would be great. :-)  Feel free to leave comments of encouragement or comments on how you are going to steal every idea you see here - I mean - borrow for future projects and how you will put your own spin on it. I hope you are having as much fun with all this as I am.

Stay tuned for more postings with fun and creative displays....

Thanks for sharing, joining in, and being a part of my life. Oh, did I mention that my boot size is 7 and a half?

Great creativity! This surely stopped people in their tracks when they saw the cowgirl in the tub. Can't wait to see more.

And, Elizabeth, what little feet you have!!

Hi Melanie,

Thanks - yes Deb has it going. And YES, this will be an annual thing...so you can start planning for next August. I will make lot so of announcements early next summer. I think it will be fun. Hopefully I will get enough entries that all of Sept will be spent showing all the entries - a whole month of inspiration - wouldn't that be great?

Thanks for commenting,

Hi Brenda,

You are so good - always almost the first to visit and comment! :-) I thought the same thing about the cowgirl in the tub. At first I had no idea what you were talking about when you said I had little feet????? I went back and looked at my post to try to figure it out and then I realized I mentioned my shoe size and I laughed for already forgetting what I wrote - maybe I do need that soak in the tub after all!

Thanks for commenting!

When you announced this I had just seen Debbie's post, just perfect. I told her it looked like Texas Ranch + French Cat House, (not that I KNOW what a French Cat house looks like, te he)This is such fun, can't wait to see the rest!

Yeeee-Haw. Love Debbie's style. This is the kind of window, that turns my car around and makes me late for an appointment. One boot left on, just in case! Then there's the softening effect, pearls, column, to die for bathtub, and the flowing peacock feathers. Love it Deb.

Look at that eye mask - is that something or what?

Thanks for the laughs,

Debbie is THE BEST.
She has the touch, the heart, the mind, and the ability to make you believe in yourself WHILE YOU ARE LAUGHING so hard you can't stand it.

That window is a work of Talking Trash Art.

Wonderful post, you captured Debbie to a T, for Texas! I finally had the pleasure of meeting her in person last week after being blogging pen pals for the last few years. Debbie is truly "all that" and more. She is talented, sassy and has a heart of pure gold. Thanks for sharing her joy of life, Pam

Ha! Would you look at that? My very own friend and W&T mall mate! I know it is hard to get past the boots, but did you eye ball the tub? There is dried up drool all over that thing from where I couldn't help but slobbering all over it. I forget to swallow when I'm oggling. Magic. That is what Debbie has. For sure! Love this idea, Elizabeth! Now I need to get into some decorating and picture taking, huh? ~Mindy

OK E, get ready for me to start gushing 'cause I am from Texas and we are all about gushers down here.
To be included in this contest and to see my photos and name on your blog is like being made queen for a day. I have been a HUGE fan of yours since the first time I was "introduced" to you and your style in MEHC. You are like the guru to all us wannabees for inspiration and living our dreams. I happen to believe that you and Debbie of Curious Sofa are the queens of displays and any compliment from you (and I do mean ANY) is something I will carry in my heart forever. No bulls*#t in my feelings...only on my boots!
This was a fun window to do and the timing couldn't have been better. I know my photos are lousy and looking at them, I see details I should have added (you would've...why didn't I?).
Whether I win or not doesn't matter. (BTW, I have seen one window and it's a doozie. Gonna be hard to beat that one!) You liked it and for this chubby girl from Texas...that's enough!
Thanks so much for coming up with this great competition. I can't wait to for the other posts to see what I can steal, I mean borrow.
P.S. Boy, if words were oil, we'd both be gazillionaraires!

Now that is so outrageous and so Debbie! Oh, she gives a new meaning to fun, her sense of humor is wonderful! I have not had the pleasure of meeting her in person, but, feels like I have known her forever!

Have a great night!

I absolutely LOVE Debbie - she really is the 'trashiest' person I know and she is at the top of my bucket list of not only shops I want to visit, but bloggers I want to meet (you're up near the top too, Elizabeth). And she is so darn funny. I swan - she is country's answer to Joan Rivers (except prettier and cleaner.)

Sorry Joan if you're reading this - you are pretty in your own way, but Debbie is well..there's no other way to say this...Debbie's beauty is God-enhanced, rather surgically enhanced althought there's nothin' wrong with that...OH! never mind!

LOL you really crack me up Elizabeth! Well I think she totally put your theme of RELAXATION into practise and realised an absolutely relaxing scene!
Your friend Debbie sure has a great sense of humor :)
Love that bath tub!
I wonder what it is in the glass balls hanging from the ceiling though? Looks great!
I also wanted to ask since you saw my last blog post and the displays around my house, do you think that I could or better should submit them to you, some display pictures I mean? If so of course I would like to share them! I love to inspire and be inspired!
xoxo~ Carola

Debbie did a great job. Not surprised. We look for them every year at Roundtop and always find something we can't live without.

I forgot to add a couple of things.
First...YOU make me laugh...out loud and long!
Second...doesn't that peacock feather look like a third eye?

I have been gone a day and half, and look at all the wonderful comments.

Debbie (talkinwhitetrash) you don't have to thank me but your words mean a lot to me. I am glad I can make you feel like a "Queen" for a day, but from all the wonderful comments, it seems like you are Queen in your own fun court with many, many who admire and love you (including me). This display competition, I hope, not only gives us a chance to show off a bit, and inspire others, but also gives us a chance to get to know each other a little more. I mean we can only talk about ourselves so much...but when someone else does the talking for you, then it's not bragging, or showy, it is just someone admiring someone else's work - and I think we need to do that more often.

I am really, really, really blessed to have had my work admired by a many over the years in many avenues and I never take it for granted. And I KNOW there are so many out there who work hard and do great work and I thought this might be a small way (which hopefully will grow into a very big way next year) to give back and put the spotlight on others.

I am so glad you gave me a chance to show you off, Debbie. You have so many who love you and I am glad to introduce to even more so they can discover what others already know about you: what a great person you are filled with a lot of creative energy - really!

Big hug from over here to over there,

So that's what that is! Drool! Scoot over Mindy, I am bigger than you, and when it comes to that tub, I don't care how cute you are, I will be dragging it over your cute butt if you get in the way as I pull it out of the window...and don't try to get your cute guy involved...I wear pointy cowboy boots and can kick...that tub is mine! :-)

Let's stay friends and just say it's mine...okay? Don't want to hurt you,
E :-)

I don't need to be at the top of your list, I am just glad to be ON it! How flattering - and yes, Debbie, I am sure, is on the top of many, many lists, maybe included the "Most Wanted" lists in some states because of her sketchy past, but that's okay, that is what makes her interesting. We still love her....and hide her...but love her....

Elizabeth Maxson said...

Yes, Carola, please email me some photos - my readers would love to see some displays of your mantel and the one I commented on that I couldn't decide which was my favorite piece. Those could be ideas for a store display. I will include those with some that came in later, after the date. Thanks for asking!

Lucky 7 - I certainly hope you send me some photos of your market tent display! Would love to see it! Good luck! :-)))

Big hug

YES! I thought that too - a third eye - wonder what is going on in her life that she needs a friggin third eye to look out for????

Great Display! Not only does it give me inspiration for my own displays, but it inspires me to take a soak in the tub...the best place to clear all the stress from your head and think up more display ideas.
